Kate, Blue Jeans and a Single Shot

Trigger Warnings: Fair warning—there’s a lot here. If you’re sensitive to certain topics, I strongly advise checking the author’s trigger warnings. I personally didn’t find anything triggering, but I can understand how others might be affected. Key triggers in this narrative include prostitution, suicide, childhood trauma, domestic violence, bisexuality, underage sexual situations, and mental breakdowns.

I will start with my favorite quote, that I can relate all too well to from MMC2 in the book: “When you build your own prison, you make the walls too high to escape.”

“A Dark Psychological Thriller in Broad Daylight” is how the cover on Sangay GlassKate, Blue Jeans and a Single Shot markets the book which led me to expect the typical dark, psychological thriller.  I was pleasantly mistaken and found this book to transcend the typical genre boundaries, weaving a dark and complex narrative filled with themes of childhood trauma, domestic violence, mental breakdowns, love, trust, and personal growth.

The story centers on Kate (FMC) and Michael (MMC1), who are both medical professionals trapped in a dysfunctional marriage. Their world shifts dramatically when Kate meets a charming stranger named Jay (MMC2), aka Blue Jeans, in the ER. His flirty demeanor and poignant questions about the lack of joy in her marriage spark something in Kate. After a particularly abusive episode with Michael, she decides to reconsider her life and make a change. When Blue Jeans unexpectedly reappears, Kate embarks on a tumultuous journey that forces her to choose between a life of risk and passion with him or a safe but stifled existence with Michael.

While I’m not easily triggered and have faced my own trauma, this story resonated deeply with me. I felt a whirlwind of emotions – from sadness and anger to joy and revenge – all the way into my heart and soul. Kate endures unimaginable hardships: domestic violence, rape, and drugging, yet she manages to maintain a sense of positivity and hope. Her journey of self-discovery is fascinating, even if her choices may seem unwise to some.

Michael, on the other hand, is a character I found utterly detestable from the start, embodying a toxic superiority complex. In contrast, Jay, with his rich backstory and emotional depth, became a character I truly adored. Despite facing his own traumas, his complexity adds a layer of realism that enhances the overall impact of the story.

Glass shines when it comes to pulling her readers directly into the storyline and reinforcing the emotional ties.  Her vivid descriptions of characters and scenes create an atmosphere readers find relatable, keeping them engaged and compelled to continue turning pages.  The investment Glass devotes to this is clear as the pacing is smooth and the transition between chapters and scenes flows seamlessly.

Kate, Blue Jeans and a Single Shot is not for everyone. Again, I emphasize the importance of reading the trigger warnings and reviews to gauge whether this book is suitable for you. It is indeed a dark psychological thriller, but it offers unique moments of levity alongside its serious themes. The story captivates with psychological complexity and thrilling encounters, all set against a striking backdrop of everyday life.

The twists throughout the book differentiate it from conventional psychological thrillers. Some twists are jarring, while others resonate deeply, prompting reflection. I found myself so invested in the characters’ relationships that I didn’t realize how close I was to the ending.

Kate, Blue Jeans and a Single Shot is a poignant dark psychological thriller that defies typical genre conventions. Sangay Glass skillfully manipulates language to evoke a spectrum of emotions—sadness, anger, and happiness. If you’re intrigued and can handle the content, I encourage you to give it a shot.

Lastly, I want to stress the importance of mental health and personal safety. If you’re in a harmful situation and don’t know where to turn, please reach out for help—whether it’s family, friends, or professionals. You’re not alone, there are more resources available than most realize.

As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation by the author, present or future, for my review.
