Jake was the first novel by Victor Peter for me and little did I know what was to come. If you’ve never read anything by Victor Peter, let me say this, if you are not in need of psychological monitoring BEFORE you read Jake, you will definitely be in need AFTER!!! LOL Seriously though, Victor Peter is a psychological thriller lover’s dream come true when it comes to mindfucks. Peter has a way with words that gets under your skin, creeps your mind and invades your every waking moment. I hope you enjoy the review of Jake, pick up the book and give it a read as well as the rest of the series to come (I’m currently reading book 4, Viktor, as an ARC and let me tell you the series has only gotten more intense – yes, I’ve read all of them up to this point LOL – I’m definitely a fan of the Jake series).

Jake

Victor Peter Read 1/1/2025-1/4/2025

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Before diving into my thoughts on this book, I want to emphasize the importance of the trigger warnings that accompany it.  They range from:  Mental health struggles, paranoia, delusions, graphic violence, death, grief, emotional manipulation and betrayal, animal imagery, self-destructive behavior, dark psychological themes, substance abuse and gaslighting.

If any of these topics resonate with you, please be mindful of your mental health while reading, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance if necessary!

Now, I’ll admit this book isn’t what I usually gravitate towards.  While I don’t typically find myself easily triggered, Jake had me questioning my own sanity at times.  It took me a few days to really immerse myself in the story and appreciate the author’s remarkable talent.  There were moments that felt repetitive, leading me to go back just to assure myself that I hadn’t missed a page.  However, once I grasped the overarching storyline, it became clear why those repetitions were included.

Tick-tock, tick-tock—think you’re safe?  Think again.

Crafting such an intense and dark tale while maintaining clarity is a testament to Peter’s genius as a writer – that or he is totally deranged.  I will stick with the genius theory as he vividly brings each character to life, painting them with a rich palette of words.

Jake (MMC) is a struggling author grappling with the grief of losing his mother, who was a renowned writer.  After facing countless rejections of his own work, he spirals into a dark place, questioning his friendships, relationships and loyalties.  As Jake sinks deeper into his surmised depressive state, his characters begin to manifest in his mind, pushing him toward actions he never thought he would consider.  Supporting characters like The Butcher, Mr. Snuggles, Detective Margot, Viktor Black, Eliza Nightshade, Jared and Jessica, and Detective Turner are all richly developed, adding depth to the narrative.  The central question surrounding Jake is whether what we are witnessing reflects his troubled mind or the reality of his world.

This book deeply explores the depths of the human psyche, weaving a story within a story as Jake’s fictional characters come to fruition.  I felt more like a companion on Jake’s journey than just a reader witnessing his story.

The questions that you long to have answered throughout can only be answered by reading Jake by Victor Peter.

Remember, Tick-tock, tick-tock!!!
