Scythe & Sparrow
-Brynne Weaver Read 2/22/2025-2/25/2025
Ta-da!!! It’s OVER!!!!! The Ruinous Trilogy has concluded, and I have to say I am so thankful. I had such high expectations for S&S and I think I hyped myself up too much – which led to major disappointment.
S&S is a dark, stabby romcom dealing with past trauma, chaos, self-discovery, quirkiness and complexity. Rose (FMC) has a good heart wanting to help women in abusive situations but she’s much better at reading her tarot cards than being stabby. Fionn (MMC) is a self-isolating, crocheting doctor afraid to embrace his dark side who becomes Roses’ personal cleanup crew with no questions asked…….ok, maybe a lot of questions but he’s still there for her every time.
The good:
Barbara. The Suture Sisters – specifically their modification of one pattern. The pina colada stabby session. Letters from FK.
The rest:
One story, S&S, fell in line with TWO timelines yet it felt flat and slow. I would have expected it to be rushed or at least full of ongoing excitement. For the time Weaver gave us two stories with B&B (will always be the best) and L&L we got one story in S&S. The beginning was great, Rose’s arrival into Fionn’s life was full of pina colada scented stabby excitement and an element of surprise. From there, we had moments of ooohhh this is going to get good then things would just fall kind of flat on its face and never really ramp up. Rinse and repeat bring in parts of the two previous books (small parts) to tie the stories together and then the end. Heck, I didn’t even feel the “spice” was as good as previous books.
Overall:
S&S had so MUCH potential to knock our socks off. I just felt a big letdown when I finished it – even after reading both epilogues. I know it is a trilogy but after the epilogues it feels as if Weaver may try to branch off with another series with one or more of the couples in series. I don’t know if I should be semi-excited about the thought of it because I do love the characters (even being disappointed with S&S I still love Rose and Fionn) or if I should just close myself off and not risk the disappointment that could come of it.
I’m not sure if I became desensitized to the darkness of the genre from B&B (and Haunting/Hunting Adeline and the Mindf*ck series after reading B&B LOL) or if S&S was truly on the milder side of spice. Regardless, I feel S&S is worth a read if you’ve read the first two just so you can finish out the trilogy and be done……well, unless Weaver expands its and from the dual epilogues it seems like she might.
