Tick, Tick, Boom

~Felicia Ferguson

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Tick, Tick, Boom takes readers on a high-stakes race against time, follow Army CID Warrant Officer Gabby Carmichael and her husband, Matt, FBI consultant and board-certified psychologist. The two battle both a crumbling marriage and a 24-hour countdown to stop a bomber in El Paso. Gabby’s unresolved childhood trauma and the devastating loss of her partner trainee, Jorge Gonzalez, just a few short months prior, threat to unravel her composure.

When a call wakes Gabby in the middle of the night from the perpetrator giving her the 24-hour deadline to prevent an explosion, she must figured out the why in order to know the where it will happen. Gabby and Matt set aside their differences to work together to track down the sociopath before time runs out. But as tension builds, and time dwindles, the real question emerges: can Gabby confront the ghosts of her past before they destroy her future?

Ferguson crafts characters that are deeply human – tough, determined, and beautifully flawed. Gabby is compelling with her blend of guilt, grit, and vulnerability grounding the story with emotional authenticity. Gabby is fully fleshed out, but Matt leaves room for improvement – but his empathy and devotion to her add emotional weight to their shared struggles.

Threading together loss, trauma, and determination with deft precision, readers are drawn directly into Gabby’s internal storm while the storytelling shines with steady pacing and immersive world-building. Set against the sunbaked grit of El Paso, the novel’s atmosphere mirrors the intensity of the characters. Subtle spiritual undertones provide a sense of hope and redemption, enriching the narrative with faith, duty, and resilience. Humming with tension every time the reader sees the phrase “tick, tick, boom,” it reminds us of the sense of urgency needed to find the bomb and bomber.

Tick, Tick, Boom delivers a first-rate story of suspense, redemption, and emotional endurance with its gripping blend of psychological thriller and Christian fiction. It’s a must-read for fans of high-stakes action!
