On the Bayou

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A stake-out at a trafficker way-station ends with Special Agent Jennifer Nash placed on forced leave. Until a government insider offers her a chance at redemption. All she has to do is accompany an elite Louisiana SWAT team on a takedown mission. But as she’s shuttled by boat into the Atchafalaya Basin, she believes some of the unit might be compromised. The raid ends in disaster. And the police find themselves outnumbered in the middle of a criminal operation, with a connected Cajun community and ruthless cartel members determined to put them down at all costs.
My Review:
Sean Bridges throws you deep into the Louisiana’s swamplands in On the Bayou – and let me tell you, it’s a heck of a wild ride from the first page, til the final sentence!
Special Agent Jennifer Nash is the lone survivor of a botched stake-out. On forced leave with her career in a freefall and reputation taking everything but friendly fire, she gets a chance at redemption. It’s simple. Accompany an elite Louisiana SWAT unit on a cartel take down in the Atchafalaya Basin and when they complete the bust, call in the clean-up crew and mission complete.
But this mission turns out to be anything but routine. From the moment she arrives on scene the tension can be cut with a knife. A boat ride deep into the bayou, no GPS, outdated maps, relying on a couple locals to get them in and out alive, and a team that isn’t in sync with each other. But the by-the-book raid turns into a bloody nightmare of gunfights that leave more questions than answers.
As the team attempts an escape at freedom, the Cajun community they invaded doesn’t take kindly to outsiders. Outnumbered and cut off from all means of communication and extraction, SA Nash has choose who she can trust and what rules she’s willing to close an eye to. Will Nash be able to save herself and any of the team? Or will the cartel and Cajun’s merge together and feed them to the gators?
Bridges is a master when it comes to character development. He takes a large cast of characters, some playing major roles and some playing minor roles, and makes them all feel equally important. Building just enough background on each to make them feel authentic and flawed. SA Nash has trauma from the botched stake-out, her friend and partner killed in that ambush. But Bridges gives her a strength to survive and move past the blame placed directly upon her. Each of the SWAT team members has his own unique personality, but as a unit, their banter and friction show them as real as people can get.
On the Bayou is a fast-paced, never a dull moment, action-packed thrill ride. Once the action kicks off, it doesn’t stop. Transitioning is seamless and clean. With vivid descriptions the atmospheric presence is life-like you can hear the mosquitoes buzzing around your head. Bridges transforms the Louisiana swamplands into a psychological trap where trust is as fragile as the next breath between dips in the murky water. Fast, feral, and uncomfortably real submerging you so deep you swear the gators are just one snap away from taking a leg.
If you are looking for an all-in psychological thriller that will live rent free in you head for long after the final page, On the Bayou by Sean Bridges is a must add to your TBR. Available on Amazon!
