The Library After Dark

~Ande Pliego

Libraries hold stories – but some refuse to stay on the shelf.

I went into this one wanting to love it – truly love it, the kind that lingers on a favorites list long after the final page. And in many ways, the foundation is there. The premise is brilliant. But for me, it ultimately felt like the story became as overwhelming for the author as it did for the reader.

At its core, The Library After Dark is a genre-blending gothic thriller layered with mystery, romantic tension, and a slow-burn unraveling of buried guilt – all set within a locked-room-style narrative. It’s an irresistible setup, especially if you enjoy library mysteries packed with twist after twist. And for a while, I was completely in.

Aria Stokes, a New York bookseller, finds comfort in stories – both reading them and sharing them with others. When Jasper, an architect she’s been dating, surprises her with an exclusive Valentine’s Day invitation to the mysterious Daedalus Library, it feels like the beginning of something special. But the evening quickly turns unsettling.

The “exclusive” tour becomes a confined group experience where not everyone is who they claim to be. As the group descends deeper into the library, secrets begin to surface – connections to the Riordan family, whispers of ghosts, and a growing sense that something is very wrong. When the first death occurs, the tension spikes. Trapped inside with no clear way out, the group must navigate hidden passages, unravel truths, and confront the possibility that the danger may be both human…and something more.

The atmosphere is where this book truly shines. Pliego brings the Daedalus Library vividly to life with cinematic detail. It feels part literary sanctuary, part labyrinth, part haunted house. The echo of footsteps, flickering candlelight, secret corridors, and even poisonous books all create an immersive, eerie experience that’s hard to forget.

The characters are layered, each with a clear motive and backstory, which adds depth to the unfolding mystery. However, this is also where the story became difficult for me. With so many characters, shifting identities, and overlapping secrets, it became challenging to keep track of who was who and what their true role was. While the complexity will absolutely appeal to some readers, I found myself needing to backtrack and reread just to stay grounded.

For readers who enjoy intricate plots, large casts, and a heavy dose of twists, this book will likely hit the mark. It delivers a compelling exploration of how stories – and the secrets we carry – can evolve into something far more dangerous when left buried.

As much as I wanted this to be a standout favorite, it ultimately wasn’t the right fit for me. And that’s always a little disappointing, especially when the potential feels so strong. Still, this is a story that will absolutely find its audience – particularly those who thrive in complexity and love getting lost in a dark, atmospheric mystery.

Overall, The Library After Dark is an immersive, twist-heavy read that explores how literary love can transform into something far more lethal when obsession takes hold.

The Library After Dark releases on May 5, 2026 and is available now for pre-order on Amazon.

I’m giving The Library After Dark 3.5 stars but rounding up to 4 because it had real potential for me outside of all the character chaos.
