The Golden Hearts Club

~Cinda K. Swalley

I’ve read a lot of stories that remind me why kindness still matters, but The Golden Hearts Club by Cinda K. Swalley is one of those rare, healing reads that gently wraps around your heart and gives it the extra hug you didn’t realize you needed. I was fully immersed, reconnecting with that fading joy that comes from years of being “the strong one”—the one carrying the weight, the one with the steady shoulders. This story is a soulful exploration of what it means to reach out, to believe in something bigger than yourself, and to let your life become a conduit for good, even in a world overflowing with negativity.

After graduating from college, sisters Katie and Megan Summers set out on a road trip they’ve spent the last year planning and saving for. Megan is practical, grounded, and fiercely protective—ready for adventure but always thinking ahead. Katie, on the other hand, is the dreamer: emotionally intuitive, hopeful, and driven by a deep desire to make a difference and find true, lasting love.

Katie has always been a vivid dreamer, able to recall even the smallest details when she wakes. Most of her dreams are warm, nostalgic, and joyful—but recently, a series of recurring dreams has left her unsettled, planting seeds of doubt about the trip.

Once they hit the open road, though, the excitement and freedom begin to quiet Katie’s fears. From camping along the Florida coast to celebrating in New Orleans, and embarking on a stretch of road across Texas that feels like a lifetime in itself, the sisters embrace each day with open hearts and open minds. Katie’s belief in doing at least one good thing for someone each day inspires her to create The Golden Hearts Club—a quiet, unspoken network of everyday good Samaritans she and Megan “induct” whenever they witness an act of kindness.

But the journey takes a turn when Katie falls ill after a swim in a cold Texas pool, forcing them to pause their travels. Low on money, they’re led to a long-abandoned motel in Arizona. Its owner, Rose, takes one look at Katie and offers them a room, ultimately nursing her back to health with unexpected compassion.

Once they’re back on the road, the sisters travel through California, then plan to head to Colorado before returning home to Ohio. But one wrong turn—sparked by Katie’s love of horses—leads them straight into the lives of the Larone family, entangling them in a chain of events that brings real danger, with stakes that could turn deadly.

Can they untangle themselves and get back on the road before things spiral too far? Or will their unwavering compassion for others become their greatest vulnerability?

Swalley masterfully balances a journey of personal growth with quiet, meaningful acts of goodness woven through every character. Katie’s arc is especially powerful as she confronts her self-worth while holding tightly to her optimism, even when tested. Megan’s transformation—from cautious skeptic to someone who begins to believe—is equally compelling. Even the smallest characters feel real and grounded, like people you might know or pass by every day.

This isn’t a fast-paced, twist-heavy read—but it doesn’t need to be. The story moves with a steady, intentional rhythm that never drags. It pulls you in and keeps you there, quietly urging you to turn just one more page. In fact, I found myself up until 4 a.m. because I had to know what happened next. The transitions are seamless, and the writing has an almost cinematic quality—you’re not just reading about the journey, you’re living it right alongside Katie and Megan.

If you’re looking for a feel-good, heartwarming story that leans less on shocking twists and more on the ripple effect of kindness, The Golden Hearts Club is a must-read.
