Just For the Summer

~ Abby Jimenez

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“Am I the asshole” ~Justin

That is the question Justin asks in a post he makes on Reddit – never expecting it to go viral. What cause it to go viral? Just believes he is cursed. Every woman he dates ends up finding her happily-ever-after…..just not with him.

Emma, traveling nurse, also believes she bears the burden of the happily-ever-after curse. When Maddie, best friend and fellow traveling nurse, stumbles across Justin’s Reddit thread it starts as a joke – quickly turning into a dare for Emma to message him. One message leads to another, turning to phone calls, and finally – a plan. If they date each other and break up it should cancel each other’s curse right? Then the next person they date should be their happily-ever-after.

Instead of their planned summer by Maddie in Hawaii, Emma convinces her that Minnesota will be just as adventurous with a cottage located on a remote island. Surprising Justin with a quick photo on a bench with a popular advertisement that is a running joke with Justin and his friend, their journey begins. The lighthearted plan soon turns into something deeper. Touching on family dysfunction, PTSD, mental health and the courage to move forward – Emma and Justin have decisions to make.

Jimenez fills this story with humor, heart and a cast of characters so full of life and vulnerabilities they feel more like friends you hang out with regularly. After just the first few pages I was hooked until the very end! You get laugh-out-loud moments like Toilet King Billboards to emotionally raw scenes that bring tears to your eyes. Transitioning is seamless while pacing is spot on, keeping things balanced with lighthearted romance and genuine depth. I applaud Jimenez with the grace and sensitivity she displays with the subjects such as mental health, PTSD and familial dysfunction.

I chose the audiobook and let me emphasize this properly, the narrators are FREAKING STELLAR!!!! When I choose an audiobook THIS is exactly what I want – voices that match characters I envision from the author’s description. Voices that capture the emotion and nuance of every scene. It’s definitely the kind of performance that elevates the story to a whole new level.

If you are looking for that feel good, romance book with depth Just For the Summer by Abby Jimenez should top your list.
