The Book of Love
-Christopher Lynch Read 2/27/2025-3/13/2025
First and foremost, this is NOT my typical read even though it was listed as a psychological/paranormal thriller. When the author asked for an ARC reader and gave the blurb on what the story was about, I was in a totally different realm with my thinking on how the story would go. While I feel it has definite psychological/paranormal traits that come from that, the overall feeling of the book did not come across and give me that true psychological/paranormal thriller feeling and I believe it was due to the sensitive subject matter.
FMC, Arielle has survived the loss of husband and MMC, Liam. This loss has overtaken her with the natural state of grief, leaving her to isolate herself from her one and only friend Cara. Persistent as she is, Cara breaks down the walls Arielle built and forced her way in. Throughout the story the two stick together, showing that a true friendship is a powerful weapon – one that can help overcome most anything. But when what is trying to kill you can’t be seen or touched, how do you go about beating it? Will Arielle and Cara be able to take on the entity haunting them and feeding off Arielle’s grief in time to save her or will she give up and allow grief to win?
Overall, I didn’t enjoy the story. It was very repetitive, it seemed every 3 paragraphs or so, the same thing was just being reiterated with different phrasing – like the author felt he needed to fluff it up. I do feel the basis of the story had a lot of potential and with some restructuring, removing some of the repetitiveness, and creating smoother transitioning would make it a standout thriller/paranormal hit – honestly though, I was more feeling the loss, the strength it took to hold oneself together, how not having to fight alone makes a world of difference and in the end, love holds the key to healing.
Regardless of my opinion on the book, I feel the author deserves 3 stars for being vulnerable enough to touch on the subject as deeply as he did. I also admire and respect him for the dedication to his wife in the beginning due to the loss of her father. If you are looking for a story that will jerk at your heartstrings and can overlook repetitiveness then I recommend giving the Book of Love a go.
As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation by the author, present or future, for my review.
