The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Taylor Jenkins Reid Read 7/8/2024-7/11/2024

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If you love the feel of Old Hollywood and a great love story with drama, twists and mystery then The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is most definitely for you!  While I’m not going to lie, it took me a bit to get into the story, so even though it was a slow burn to start once it caught that spark, that ish was on fire – like blazing!  I ended up reading this in one sitting because the NEED to know who, what, where, when and why was so strong I couldn’t put it down – I was truly entranced!

Reid has created an stunning story with a dual FMC which I find refreshing as most books focus on a single FMC to keep her the strong, independent type.  In TSHEH though, both FMC’s were well balanced and thoroughly developed by Reid leaving you wanting for nothing by the end.  So, you naturally have Evelyn Hugo whom the book is named after.  An aged Hollywood legend wishing to finally break her silence and tell her life story – from poverty to riches, love to heartbreak, secrets to scandal.  Leaving everyone, including Monique Grant, completely astonished, as to WHY Hugo chose Grant to be the one to break her story.  Now why is everyone so confused as to why Hugo chooses Grant?  Well, Monique Grant is an unknown ambitious magazine journalist with nothing in print to note.

Weaving a complex and heartwarming journey, Reid builds a fully significant story with Hugo’s life and how she imparts it to Grant, at times leaving Grant completely tormented and wanting to walk out, ending her time with Hugo and her story.  Let me tell you, I felt EVERY SINGLE MOMENT of Grant’s torment.  There were moments when I was ready to walk away from the book for the very same reasons, yet Reid left you yearning for more, the NEED to know what was to follow.

As the story wraps up, the final plot twist is FREAKING MINDBLOWING!!!  I dropped the book – thank goodness it was a book this time and not my kindle – when I read that HUGE twist and just sat letting it sink in before I could finish off the book.  It was most definitely a twist I did NOT see coming.  I really don’t think Reid can top this one, but I challenge her to try!  I have added her to my fav authors list to keep an eye out for new drops in hopes she can exceed my expectations now set for her!

I invite you to join Monique on her journey to tell Evelyn’s story and find out all the juicy details of her life!  Pick up your own copy of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and curl up with a mind-blowing novel!
